ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Cold. Snow. Ice. Dark. It’s understandable that Midwestern winters can dampen our spirits and our productivity, especially if we leave for work before sunrise and get home after sunset. However, we don’t have to resign ourselves to months of gloom, doom and lethargy. Susan Kersey, clinical assistant professor of nursing at Purdue University, will suggest some practical ways to stay happy and productive during the darkest days of the year. She’ll also discuss the difference between the winter blues and seasonal affective disorder — a mental health issue requiring professional treatment — and what to do if we or someone we work with is experiencing it.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Susan Kersey has a master of science in nursing from the Indiana University School of Nursing with a major in child and adolescent psychiatric/mental health nursing. From 2010-2017, she worked with the Wabash Valley Alliance as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, where she collaborated on a treatment team to evaluate and diagnose, prescribe medication and manage medication to help children and families meet their treatment goals and function at their highest level. Since 2008, she has also lectured at Purdue University, sharing her passion for psychiatric and mental health nursing to undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
