It’s a new day for journalists, public relations professionals, and bloggers. Online communities, specifically social media, have given rise to instantaneous feedback, 24/7 interactions, and citizen journalism. Come explore what’s happening on the “social” side of life.

A public relations and new media consultant at Sevans Strategy, Sarah Evans has worked extensively in the non-for-profit, higher education, and healthcare sectors, focusing on media relations, message management, coalition building, deployment strategies, and organizational change.

But it’s her personal mission — to engage and employ the use of emerging technologies in all communication — that connects her with a rapidly growing base of more than 26,000 people.

A self-described “social media freak,” she initiated and moderates #journchat, the top-trending weekly live chat between PR professionals, journalists and bloggers on the microblogging platform, Twitter. She is a guest writer for Mashable, one of the most popular social media blogs in the world, runs her own blog PRsarahevans.com and is a partner on namechk, a web tool used to identify and secure brand names across multiple social media platforms. She most recently worked with a local crisis center to raise more than $160,000 in three weeks with the help of social media.

Registration for the presentation begins at 11:30 a.m. with a lunch catered by Panera served at 11:45 a.m. The program will begin at noon. The cost is $10 for AWC members and $12 for nonmembers. It also requires the abilities of a skilled interviewer – someone who can adequately capture the personality and speaking patterns of a business leader or notable public figure.

That’s the subject of the Lafayette Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications meeting on Tuesday, January 20. Guest speaker John Norberg of Lafayette is a writer, author, humorist, and a chronicler of the human condition. He has been writing his humor column for the Lafayette Journal and Courier since 1972. For several decades, he also wrote award-winning news and feature stories, most about area residents. He currently is a writer in Purdue University Development.

Norberg is the author of four books, the most recent focusing on the history of flight through the stories of Purdue graduates — from their work with the Wright Brothers to space exploration. He’s also written about Purdue’s World War II generation graduates, its remarkable relationship with Asia, and its band program. He is currently capturing the story of the presidencies of Martin Jischke, who led Purdue from 2000 to 2007, and Steven Beering, 1983-2000.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, 638 North Street, Lafayette. Lunch, catered by Panera, will be served at noon with the program beginning at 12:15 p.m. Cost is $10 for AWC members and $12 for non-members. Please RSVP by noon on Friday, January 16 to Kristal Arnold at karnold@purdue.edu or (765) 496-6811. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your reservation.
