Civility in the Workplace
Presenter: Beverly Davenport Sypher, PhD, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Susan Bulkeley Butler Chair for Leadership Excellence
Professor of Communication, Purdue University

Time: Registration and catered lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m.; presentation will start at noon

Excessive workloads. Unreasonable deadlines. Overcrowded conditions. Longer working hours. Longer commutes.

These are just some of the things that put employees in a bad mood. And it’s a fast track to incivility, according to Beverly Davenport Sypher, Purdue’s Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs.

Sypher’s research on civil discourse grows out of long-standing interests in workplace communication and quality of work-life issues. In addition to numerous research articles and technical reports, she has published two books on the contemporary American workplace and is under contract for a third book entitled Destructive Organizational Communication.

She is also the Susan Bulkeley Butler Chair for Leadership Excellence and Professor of Communication. Her primary responsibilities at Purdue include faculty affairs and faculty development. She is a former member of the board of directors for the International Communication Association. Her research also spans health and technology fields, including funded research for health-related entertainment education in the Peruvian Amazon and e-health and telehospice in the United States.
